Pumpkin Spice Playdough

When my kids were little I made homemade playdough ALL the time.  In the fall it was pumpkin spice, the winter was gingerbread or vanilla cookie or peppermint, and other times I would use Koolaid.  My kids loved all of the sensory things that I did (also did things like scented colored rice).  They would play with beans or flour or shaving cream.

Ethan pulled out some shaving cream the other day to play with his cars in, and I realized that I should take advantage of this time of them still wanting to do these things because they won’t want to for much longer.  In fact, it’s not often anymore.

So today I decided to make some pumpkin spice playdough!  It’s so fun and easy and the boys did the majority of the work.

I had a friend ask how I did it so I decided to write a post about it!

These are the ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp cream of tarter
  • 1/3 cup salt
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Food coloring

We tripled this recipe but these are the basic steps:

  1. Use about 10 drops of red and 20 drops of yellow food coloring IN the water.  Stir.

2. Put the tbsp of oil in the water.

3. Mix the dry ingredients in a pot.

4. Pour the liquid into the dry and stir well.

5. Turn the stove on to medium heat.

6. Stir and scrape until it turns into one lump.

7.  Turn onto counter and knead a bit then cover with a towel.

8. Let cool!  Play!

I took some to a friend that has littles along with some cookie cutters and a small rolling pin.  Their 5 year old played with it immediately!  I love being able to provide fun for other littles!
